Journal February 2023

The colder period has started in Nijar. Here, the cold of winter comes late in the season, while November and December are usually quite agreeable months. In these months, temperatures near 20 degrees and with the Andalusian sun, the days feel like the summer of Northern Europe. In exchange, the cold can last until April or even the first half of May. Luckily, cold never means freezing and it’s not the same as up north. Without any central heating, we equipped the rooms with gas heaters and we have a wood stove in the meditation room to give us warmth during our daily meditations.

In the kitchen, we try to apply more and more the idea of preparing natural and real food. We already abandoned many types of pre-fabricated ‘food’ like stock cubes, tomato puree, and refined products and we refrain from using any sweeteners in our meals. We try to buy as much as possible on the local markets, avoiding the supermarket and the use of anything packed in plastic. We make our own stock from vegetable scraps and for some time already we are baking our own daily sourdough bread. In this way we try to take responsibility for what we feed ourselves and our guests. In order to start purifying our bodies, so our body is better able to heal itself from dis-ease and pollution.

Silence retreat Nijar 3 – 7 januari 2023 – by Peter van Diepen

[It’s early in the evening. I’m looking at the white houses of Nijar scattered like pieces of a fallen puzzle in the valley in front of me. The setting sun casts a red/purple glow over the valley in which little activity can be detected at this time. In the distance I see the headlights of a car driving on one of the roads leading to Nijar, a dog barking in the neighbour’s garden, the clock strikes seven in the village a little further on, otherwise it is quiet. I had just attended a Harpmood with Yoginam Abbahji and wanted to stretch my legs before dinner is served. The mountain behind Yoginam’s house is ideal for this. After about fifteen minutes of climbing I have a beautiful view over the village and the mountains behind Nijar. In silence I let the Harpmood work on me and feel a gratitude rise. Grateful for the location where I am now with the view I have, the group of people around me this week and the presence of Yoginam Abbahji.]

[Dinner is, like every evening, very tasty and exceeds my expectations every day. There is homemade bread in baskets on the kitchen table, soup, homemade hummus, olive paste, a fresh salad and other delicacies. The group of seven people participating in this retreat, who are now sitting at the table together, came from all over Europe: Ukraine, Germany, Portugal, Latvia, Sardinia and the Netherlands. The meal is eaten in silence. They look ahead and in their eyes I see the peace they brought to the dining table after the Harpmood. After dinner I go for a walk in the garden. Although it is dark, the outlines of the orange trees, fig trees, palm trees, cacti and the triangle of the Triad of Nâm are just visible, illuminated by the lampposts that surround the garden. It is a cloudless evening so I can see quite a few stars in the sky. This is how I recognize the constellation Orion (the Hunter) and one of the planets.]

[It was another beautiful day that actually filled itself with attunements in Yoginam Abbahji’s house, walks in the garden, musings in the sun on the terraces in front of our houses and beautiful contact moments in the silence with participants of the group. One time I saw Yoginam Abbahji taking a walk in the garden with Tim. Although every day in the five-day silent retreat looks more or less the same, I experience every day differently. At one attunement I sit in a relaxed position and the sounds of the Harp of Yoginam Abbahji transport me to an area between waking and sleeping. In another I am emotionally touched and in yet another the world of Awe and Wonder is revealed that Yoginam Abbahji often talks about and I experience something that cannot be described in words.]

Tijd is iets wonderbaarlijks.

[The farewell at the end of this wonderful week of silence is difficult for some. Tears of emotion flow because although we have not communicated with each other these past few days, a bond has been built. A bond that will apparently be broken when everyone goes their own way again, but that is carried along in the memories and hearts of the participants of this silent retreat. Time is a wonderful thing. Scientists try to describe time with formulas, but in doing so they ignore the experience of time. When I sit back on my couch after a successful journey home, I see on the calendar that I have only been gone for ten days, but it seems to me that at least a month has passed. I have been able to gain so many beautiful (feeling) experiences in such a short time that it seems as if time in the world of experience has slowed down compared to the outside world.]

The garden of the Asharum Nijar: Back to the Roots

We enjoy our daily shot of orange juice, freshly pressed from the beautiful trees. We are eating lettuce, broccoli, chards and kale from our vegetable garden. More potatoes and broad beans are growing, as well as onions and cabbages. This season we focus more on adding bushes to the garden, particularly flowering bushes and last month we purchased about a dozen of rosebushes that are planted around the pavilion. Local flower varieties are added as well and we are looking into the best way to add more of the typical Mediterranean herbs like thyme and lavender. Last year we planted many of them, and while most of them thrive, not all of the planted herbs look like they are very happy. Some parts of our garden are very desert like, have compacted earth so water does not penetrate easily, and other parts have more healthy soil, through the presence of trees that yearly loose their leaves, or because it is more sheltered from wind, or because it is only partly exposed to the summer sun. It is a continuous search of what works well in our garden and what spots needs extra attention and which specific plants like this climate with its extreme heat, cold winter nights and rough winds. We are happy that we are having a Zoom meeting with our expert Chris on the day that this newsletter is published, because even though there is regular contact with him, a meeting with all of the residents present gives us the time to discuss certain topics in more detail.

And some real rain fell last week; for nearly 24 hours sweet water fell out of the sky. All trees and plants revived after this blessing. The soil is saturated with water and many plants that were showing mediocre progress suddenly came back to life. It’s a true joy to experience nature at work and see the resilience of plants. As the rain poured, we were excited to see if the newly made raised paths would hold. Luckily, the design kept its shape and the waterways that were created to drain the excess water did their job quite well. This means we can continue with this way of raising the paths throughout the whole garden, and we are experimenting now with a raised path without the use of concrete.

More building and improving

The Shrine (our mediation hall) is near completion. The floor tiles are now being laid and soon we can star installing the fire stove and dress the space with basics like a carpet and some lights, so we can do our daily meditations there. The builders have already started the next project, next to the Shrine. A tool shed and a workshop will be created there, so the tools, wheelbarrows and other garden supplies are in a more easily accesible place with regard to the garden. The idea is that the current workshop and the current meditation room will be converted into two rooms, that both will be more spacious and perhaps a little more luxurious than the current rooms.

Garden of Nâm Living This edition is inspired by the landscaping work and contributions of Chris de Waard. Chris helped us from the very beginning to revive and shape what was once a dried-out and almost lost piece of land that, nevertheless, with the dedication of a few pioneers and the visionary support of Yoginâm, had the potential of becoming

Garden of Nâm Living Although astronomically spoken the new year had already started on the 21st of December, culturally seen a new year starts with the month of January. And it did so gently for us with just a little fireworks in the distance on a very pleasant Monday morning. It happened almost unnoticed here in the Garden of Nâm

Prologue At the morning of writing and editing this journal a new construction worker arrived. He had heard of this place and was curious to see what our ‘iglesia’ looked like, as his Orthodox Romanian colleague put it. The man came from Morocco and was impressed by the elegant simplicity of our meditation hall. “¿De qué religión eres? he asked.
