Living in the Garden of Nâm: The Essence of Meditation

Just a few decades ago, meditation belonged to a near and far oriental practice of certain religious and spiritual traditions, being imported to the occident by different movements and initiatives. This gradually formed the so called New Age movement. In those days, not long ago, meditation was understood in the occident rather more as contemplation, since meditation, as we generally practice today, was considered then as a dangerous activity, giving the devil the opportunity to enter our mind whilst it would not be engaged in prayer or concentration. Nowadays meditation is widely spread, applied and accepted even as therapeutically and became an industry on its own.

Nevertheless, there exist still many misconceptions among people in general and also among meditators in particular. Exclamations like “Meditation is too difficult, I cannot stop my thoughts. Meditation is therefore not for me.” Or on the other hand “I didn’t find yet the optimal meditation method or technique”. Or even when people talk about “my meditation, I need my meditation”, all indicate a subtle, yet detrimental, misunderstanding of the concept of meditation.

“Meditation belongs to your daily life. It is like eating, drinking, breathing and sleeping. It is opening to your deepest essence. Meditation is not an activity. Real meditation is a moment of letting go. It is going back to your base, and then allow things to happen without expectation, without trying to influence things.”

Nâm regards meditation as a natural activity just as cooking, sleeping, cleaning and working are. In the Garden of Nâm, we integrate three short meditation sessions during the day, which regular guests can attend if they wish. A four day course called “The Essence of Meditation” offers the opportunity for anyone from beginner to advanced, to explore, to experience and to deepen a sense of meditation.

A balanced program of interaction, explanations of different techniques and actual meditation is provided, carried by the serene setting of the Garden of Nâm and the invisible, yet, tangible presence of Yoginâm, the fountain of the garden.

After engaging in this 4-day course and being (re-)introduced to the principle, purpose and practice of the essence of meditation, on one owns account, the participant can develop a simple but powerful tool and anchor in life.

The endeavour to start integrating meditation to the rhythm of daily living is open for everybody. Its starts with simply taking the time, creating an opportunity and then by allowing it to happen. The Essence of Meditation course can be repeated every now and then to further deepen the practise.
